Computer Switches Off After A Few Minutes

Today I was given a computer to fix she (the owner) has only just bought off the internet i have no idea if its new or second hand anyway she goes to turn it on and it will run normally for a few minutes then it will switch itself off i went into the bios and checked the temps on the processor a 5600+ amd and its reading 43*. I realise that sometimes these censors can be wrong so i'm not completely believing it. The motherboard is an asus and they are pretty reliable so i don't think it has gone although it is a possibility. I'm Going to check all cables and such make sure they are all plugged in the right places. if you guys can give any advice and if you have experienced this problem before let me know. Thanks for any help in advance.

*Edit: just noticed that there is only a 400w psu in there which may not be enough i've got a 550w here i could test.

Is it just switching the whole system off or does it bluescreen/give an error?

switching off randomly is a psu issue. sure that thing says 400w but do you know how old it is? after a year or so a psu can't give 100% of its rated power, more like 80-75%. checking the system with a 550w is a good move.

before you do that, run an intensive program (like a game, crysis is good for this) and if it shuts down quick after playing for a while then the PSU is your problem. (when my generic psu was bad, crysis shut down the computer in ~5 mins. some games won't work for this, so try a few. far cry 2 didn't shut my comp down with the crappy psu.)
 
Yeah it just shuts off no bsod although i can't logg into windows to check it doesn't give me enough time the machines insides look brand new so it was probally bought new its a 5600+ amd dual core 2900 mhz so i'd be saying (not being an amd fan) that would suck alot of juice yes. Thanks Linkin93 for confirming the psu was the problem i put the 550 w in and it runs perfect no probs got to hate manufacturers putting in cheap a@# psu's.
 
Well first to see if it is the OS that is making it shut off, boot from a bootable Linux CD. If it shuts off then it is the Hardware. Chances are it is a faulty power supply.
