Computer Surround Sound Problems

Ok so I had my computer and sound all set-up but I had to reformat and ever since reformatting I am unable to get my audio back to how it originally was.

My original setup had one of my Dell XPS M1530 audio jacks filled with your standard audio cable, which was then hooked up to my yamaha surround system. 5.1 surround sound worked well with everything, including iTunes and windows media center etc.

Ever since reformatting I can only get sound out of my left and right speakers! I am using the latest sigmatel audio driver, have configured the settings in both windows media center and windows sound to 5.1 but whenever I click "test speakers" only sound comes out of the left and right speakers. There are no problems with the actual surround sound system its to do with my actual computer.

HELP HELP HELP!

Just to confirm, you had one cable running from your computer to the receiver and you were getting discreet 5.1? If that is the case, you were using a form of digital audio out. Make sure your audio settings are set to SPDIF/Digital Out and if your computer supports it, have the Dolby (or DTS) Live option enabled.

Otherwise, you may also want to check the surround mode on your receiver. You may just be in stereo mode where you were in some sort of virtual surround before.
