Computer Performance w/ networking

Hi, I have question regarding my computer with networking. I noticed that when my custom built computer is connected to an internet source or networking (wired/wireless) source its download speeds are not good as my other computer that is prebuilt and I was wondering why that happens. As well as whenever my computer is connected to a wired network its performance is significantly reduced while on a prebuilt it is barely affected. Both are connected to the networks through the motherboards. Here are the two computers being contrasted to:
Custom built:
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe mobo
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ CPU
Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT FX video card
2gb OCZ ddr400 sd ram
550 GB HDD (space)
2 DVD Burners

Prebuilt:
Gateway 818GM
K8TM / K8MM MS-6741 (v1.X) M-ATX Mainboard
Nvidia Geforce 5500 FX video card
1GB DDR400 SD Ram
AMD Athlon 64 3700 CPU
1 DVD Burner
200 GB HDD


Is there any way to improve its internet connection as well as computer performance while connected to a network? For example buying a network card or something? Thank you
 
It would not be the specs affecting the speed, it may be the programs you are running on the computer.

For example a virus/spy.W/trojen may be in your computer taking up the speed.

Virus scan then try it again
 
No I have anitvirus programs and spyware programs so I know it is not a viruses or anything such like. I know it has to be hardware related I just can't figure out what exactly would cause it besides just the motherboard or something since the network or internet is connected to.
 
I dont know much about that but your on-board network cards might be at different speeds. So maybe your custom rig might have a low speed card and your pre-build rig might have a higher speed card. Like I said I dont know much about that. ONLY trying to help....
 
Well I do appreciate all your help. Do you think if I added a network card of a higher speed or something, that would make a difference in my computer performance and internet connection, or would that slow down the internet connection?

There is no way you can guarantee no viruses on a windows machine. Every avtivirus program detects some different viruses that others can't. And even if you have them all there are unknown viruses in the wild. It's not necessarily hardware, there is a huge possibility of a virus there!

No a new faster network card will not slow it down, it will improve the speed of hte internet and the computer as well as it will ease up some stress off the cpu.
 
are you talking about file transfer speeds across a network or specifically internet speeds? How are you testing your speeds?

If its file tranfers speeds- Check the NIC configuration. Is it set on Auto Negotiate or Full duplex?
Are you using firewalls?
Bad Network Cable?
Try another port on the router/switch. Maybe the one the faster PC is using

If it's internet speeds -
Viruses and Spyware have been mentioned. Check the task Mgr to see whats running.
Are you using the same browser?
Anti Virus programs the same on both?
Anything running thats doing real time monitoring of your internet connection thats on one and not the other? S&D resident?
If your network is manually configured, are they using the same DNS server?

thats all I can think of at the moment.
