Computer Hanging

My computer has started hanging randomly, when it does it everything stops (mouse stops responding, hard disk light stays on).

I thought it was a recently added graphics card at first but after putting my old one back discovered it was not. I also thought it could be a problem with my windows install so I have wiped and reinstalled and it still seems to do it.

It can sometimes happen when the computer is nudged.

Any ideas what could be causing this?
 
I've just tried reseating the processor and ram with no joy, also it sometimes fails to post. It just stays at the gigabyte splash. Could the hard disk do that?
