computer going to sleep

So i have always been taught that you shouldn't turn your computer off frequently. Should I let it go to sleep when not in use? Someone tried to tell me you shouldn't let it continuously go to sleep either and to set the hard drive to spin slow after a certain amount of inactivity.

I don't see the point in any of that...? You won't hurt it by shutting it down or putting it in sleep mode.

edit: And is it not common sense that having a hard drive on constantly would put more wear on it than if you let it turn off?
