Computer Freezing

Yesterday, I installed a fresh copy of XP Pro. I didn't install anything else. I went to the control panel and set a user account as the admin so I could set a password. I then locked the computer (switched user), then turned the screen off for the night. I left it alone for 20 hours. When I turned the screen back on to start working on it, i noticed the screen saver was frozen. Do I have a bad copy of XP?

Look at your Event Viewer log. To open Event Viewer follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, then click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
2. In the console tree, click Event Viewer.

What error codes are you finding right before crashes? Look for the red exclamation points in your Event Viewer right before it freezes.

There are no errors. I just tried to install AVG and it keeps freezing up. I don't know what to do...

I was thinking that it might be a driver error with the MotherBoard and Graphics card. I didn't install one of the drivers in the Motherboard and still no change.

Open the side of your case and inspect your fans. Are all of them spinning? Is this a custom build? Did you use thermal paste on the processor? Is your heatsink clogged with dust and debris? Touch your processor heatsink and test the temperature (be careful because it may be extremely hot.)

All of the fans are spinning. I think it might be a problem with the .Net Framework. This is what it is installed.

- Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2
- Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2
- Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1

Do I need to have all of these installed?

.net framework? i have both 2.0 and 3.0 so iono if you need them both but what happen when you didnt install them and was it after you install that the problems started to happen?

I am not trying to be rude and redundant but you didn't answer the following questions:

Is your computer a custom build?
Did you use thermal paste on the processor?
Is your heatsink clogged with dust and debris? Touch your processor heatsink and test the temperature (be careful because it may be extremely hot.)

Is your computer a custom build? Yes, This is the build: http://www.computerforum.com/154325-first-computer-build.html#post1274610 I didnt install the HSF unit as I broke it.

Did you use thermal paste on the processor? Yes, this stuff: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835154003 Yesterday, I removed the heatsink and CPU and put down new paste.

Is your heatsink clogged with dust and debris? No

Touch your processor heatsink and test the temperature (be careful because it may be extremely hot.) feels cool to the touch.

The only fan I'm not able to tell if spining is the PSU fan as it is hidden.

If you are touching your heatsink while your system has been running for a while and it is still cool your heatsink is likely not the issue.

Shut off your computer and try pulling out the RAM modules using only one at a time. See if you are still getting crashes when running your system on a single RAM module.

Be sure to use electro static precautions before touching any of the RAM modules (touch the frame of your computer case before handling any components).

I think I have the problem fixed. It was the Video Card. I just recieved the new one installed it. It is running about 20 degress C cooler than the other one.

Have you loaded the motherboard drivers yet? There should be a disk that came with your motherboard that you use to install the software needed to run the system.

Yes, that is the first thing I did after installing the Operating Software (XP Pro).

Now, when the computer go into Screen Saver mode, and nothing is active, it is not freezing (it did before the new GPU card install.)

The computer did freeze when I had WINAMP playing and the computer went into Screen Saver Mode. (Same as before.)

The first time I tried to Install Adobe Reader 9, it froze up at 98% completed. I restarted and trying to install it again and no problems. (Same as before.)

I downloaded ParetoLogic DriverCure. It is a software that checks if you has stuff (drivers, programs) out of date. It is saying that the RealTek RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC is out of date. i have version 5.682.1122.2007 and it is saying that the new version is 6.193.0430.2007

ATI HDMI Audio (also RealTek) is out of date. I have Version: 5.10.0.5857 and the new version is 6.0.1.5668 Version 5 was released in 5-2009 and Version 6 was released 7-2008.

The last one is RealTek High Definition Audio. I have Version: 5.10.0.5864 (released 6-2009). It is saying the new version is 6.0.1.5680 (released 6-2008. I trying to install Version 6 but it said "No Driver was supported in this driver package" on install.

Any ideas?

2048Megabytes, thanks for the ideas, i will try anything. I would love to have this computer running correctly.
