Computer DNS

Hi guys,

Hope someone can help me out with this. I would like to know where/how to purchase/find a computer DNS that always works? I need to get my computer working with a foreign (non Italian) DNS.
The one I have inserted now (found it somehow in the web) doesn't always work, so I would like to get somehow my own DNS number.
Any ideas?

Thanks for any help I can get.

I am not sure of your question, you mean a web hosting domain?

Sorry for the confusion, but I am pretty green when it comes to those things. Here is exactly what I need.
-when I click with the right pad of my mouse on the little computer screen symbol (connection symbol) down on the right side of my computer screen, a connection status window pops up, then in this window I click "Properties", then the next window I click "Networking", then I click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)".
Then a window pops up which gives you in the below half 2 options. The first option is always automatically and says:
"Obtain DNS server address automatically"
The second option is the option I have to choose. It says the following:
"Use the following DNS server adresses"
And there under "Prefered DNS Server and Alternate DNS Server" you can insert one or two number/ip addresses.
That's what I need. Hope this can be understood.

Sorry again for the confusion. Hope someone can help me out .

Thanks

all of that information would be given to you by your ISP, most of the time DNS is resolved via DHCP

Thanks Tlarkin, but I need a foreign (non Italian ) DNS address, not that one from my ISP. Practically I switch off the Italian DNS address given from my ISP automatically and insert another DNS address (non Italian). I need to find a website where I can purchase/find such a DNS address.

Any ideas?

Thanks

okay i don't think we are talking about the same thing. Your ISP has a DNS server which you are a part of, you can not change this otherwise you will no longer be on their network.

You can't get an IP from your ISP and then just manually connect to another DNS server in another country.

If its web hosting you are looking for they will provide and resolve your DNS, but those are pay for services

Tlakin, thanks for your input. I don't know if we talk about something else, but if you follow the steps I wrote before, what would you call this? I have a foreign DNS address which I insert in the described space, so my computer runs over the DNS address I have inserted in the space, not over the DNS address my ISP gives me automatically. It's defenetely working, because my computer runs always like this.
Don't know if it's web hosting, but like I said I need a usable DNS address. Don't care if I have to pay for it, important is just that it's not Italian. Would you know some website where I can purchase something like that?

Thanks

Junah

P.S. Just need a non Italian DNS address that works, that's it!

Forgot to ask before, but would a screenshot be helpful?

Thanks

okay, to join a domain network you have to have the ip settings in your network client, like you described. However, what you are asking is not possible. You can't just join anyone's domain, you have to be a part of it. On top of that most domains require some sort of authentication over OD/AD/NDS which would require you to have a valid user account with that network.

here goes some info which you should be able to translate into a different language if the english is too hard to understand

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_Name_System

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name_registry

Notice the second link is about domain name registry and how different countries have different codes, for example Italy is .it

Now if its a different domain name registry you want you will have to purchase hosting from a domain name provider like network solutions, go daddy, or whatever. They can sell you a .com or .net domain.

does that clear it up? You simply can not change the DNS server in your network settings to a different one unless you know all the settings, and are part of that network to begin with. Like i said most domains will have some sort of way of authenticating users.

Thanks for your info, but I think we don't get each other. You telling me I can't change the DNS server, but I know I can, because that's what I am already doing for over a year now. For example I have the adresses of the DNS server of a German University (which can be found on the Universities web site). I take this address and insert it where I have desribed before. So now my computer runs over them DNS server.
Do you know what I mean?

Thanks

well you need to contact whoever's DNS server you want to connect to tech support or help desk. You must know the IP of the DNS server and other various settings of the network.

Just asking for an IP to connect to another domain is probably not going to get anywhere. If its a german domain you are trying to connect to contact them directly and ask for their info

Forgot before, but would you or anyone else know where I can find the Ip of other DNS servers? Would there be any websites?

Thanks again

well most DNS servers are behind NAT, especially over in Europe so I would contact the network you are trying to connect to and make sure you have permission and the information
