Comptia Certifications

Hey guys,

So I'm looking to get some certifications in IT and move out of Internet suport. After searching these forums and the internet in general, it looks like A+ is always a good first cert and then you just build off of that? Not sure where I want to take this, but I'm thinking that Sys Admin, Unix Admin, Database Admin sound interesting. Definately don't want to be a programmer. After this I was thinking about then getting net +, security + and then moving on to Cisco or server + etc.

So I have two questions:

1. what is the best way to study for A+? Can't afford a class. I do have an A+ for dummies and some other computer repair, command line and networking books with some practice tests. Is that sufficient? I'm not doing any computer repair at my current job, but am taking help desk calls over the phone.
2. After A+, If i'm serious about sys admin will net+ and security + help? Or would a different cert path be more beneficial for me?

Cheers!

im doing an apprenticeship at the momment where A+ is one of the certificates we study for i dont know if they have apprenticeships where you are. But basically you're best watching videos on the internet, reading books etc. A+ isn't necesarily for just repair, its a foundation certificate and many other CompTIA certifications recommend having A+.

So basically find a good book read it cover to cover, oh and practice with whats relevant in the course say take apart your computer and put it back together :P ive done quite a few minor A+ tests this week and passed majority of them so really if you revise and study from books you will be fine.

Second questions right, i also want to go into the server side of the industry and im taking 4 extra comptia certifications - Network+,Server+,Security+ and Linux+. If you have the mony i would recommend taking all of these certifications or at least Network+ as it is recommended you take network+ before you do any of the others.

CompTIA are good certifications to have and are cheap as compared to other certifications, and the more qualifications the better! So id recommend taking the four extra qualifications as i listed above if you can. I would say starting in the server path you would probably do well starting with comptia and then doing other certs such as MCSE, CCNA etc. Actually if you do a combination of A+ and N=, A+ and Server+ or Security+ you are actually exempt frm one MCSE exam and therefore have one less exam to do which is great!

Anyways hope i helped a bit and ask away if youve got any more questions :)

Hi, For individuals, attaining certifications means increased job security, additional career opportunities and increased credibility in the workplace. For businesses, hiring certified workers means higher customer satisfaction, increased productivity and lower employee turnover. So everyone can get many more advantages.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going for it I guess. A+ and I think I can build off of that one to get net + after that fairly easily and take it from there. I work for a telco so getting some extra net + experience might be possible. I have an old computer that I can work on and study with. I can take it apart put it back together and install stuff to my hearts content. Any online study groups or anything that anyone knows of. I've looked around and I'm really only seeing forums like this one.

Cheers!
