Hello,

I recently purchased a Compaq Contura Aero
4/25 just to have a play with. When I turn the
computer on the HDD makes a few noises
then it diplays the RAM, then the PCMCIA
Floppy drive makes one small noise and a
message comes up saying "Non-system disk
or disk error" when I press any key with a
floppy in it it does nothing at all it just keeps
on displaying the message, Any help on this
would be greatly appreciated,

thankyou

Wow...that thing's a beast... I remember working on one of those quite a while ago.

Anyway, what kind of "noises" does the drive make? From the error you're describing, it sounds like it's trying to either boot off a non-bootable device. Either a floppy or an empty hard drive. Have you tried creating a boot disk of some sort and booting to dos?

BTW, I don't know what OS route you planned on trying, but you're pretty much limited to Windows 98. I'm thinking 2000/XP required a Pentium 166. Doubt Linux would be too happy on there either, at least not GUI versions.

No it doesn't boot when the floppy is removed, the HDD makes a noise as if it is trying to do something but can't proceed.
