One day my uncle's nice PC speakers suddenly stopped working for no apparent reason. They work fine when plugged in to my MP3 player, but not with his computer. However, my earphones work fine with his comp. How is this possible? The computer has no way of knowing what it's 3 wire audio output is connected to.
comp + earbuds: OK. MP3 player + speakers: OK. comp + speaks: bad

What speakers are they?
are they 5.1 or 7.1 or something else?
What soundcard is he using?
are you plugging the headphones into the same socket as the speakers are plugged into?
Try downloading new drivers for the sound card. Dunno if it will work, just a thought.
