Toshiba Equiem A100 Laptop

Cut a long story short(ish) , I was looking for a keygen for a software trawling many a dodgy spyware/virus ridden site when I downloaded knowing full well there was a 90% chance of the file being infected. My AV picked it up and all was good ....until I did a restart when I started getting BSODS and it wouldn't even let me start in SAFE mode(giving BSODS again) So I shut down and came back to it a few hours later after kids were sorted/housework etc, I pressed the power button and it lit up as usual , HDD spun (AFAIK) and dvd drive fired up too but....... NOTHING on screen - No POST No Boot Loader (linux/win7 dual boot) No BEEP error codes NOTHING!!

I think my Mobo has failed as my USB bluetooth wouldn't light up either.
I thought Graphics had gone but I would have thought that would result in BEEP codes as would RAM(which I swapped out just to check) , I also know the HDD hasn't died on me as I did a AV scan by removing it from the computer and plugging it into another via USB>SATA lead.

So firstly- Is my diagnosis of failed mobo most likely cause and secondaly- COULD it have been caused by Malicious software download?

It could definitely be from malicious software. Is legacy USB support turned on in your BIOS? If not, you often won't get any response from the USB ports until the OS loads.

Buy software, don't pirate it. :)

I'm sure Legacy is turned on but I can't see because the screen is blank!! as for the software, it wasn't mine- I was looking for a keygen for someone else who's tighter than a ducks ar*e  I even plugged in an external monitor and still nothing!!
I can't see malicious software corrupting outside the OS??

Try disconnecting the hard drive to see if it will post. If it does then you have a bad HDD.

I had already thought of that,(thanks for replying boss) in fact I've done just about everything I can do diagnostic wise that I can think of. I fix/build pc's now and again and this is the first time in the last five years I have had one as stubborn as this!!
I have a mate who runs a pc repair shop and has the diagnostic equipment for checking Mobo's but one LAST thing I thought might be the cause is maybe the virus I caught has flashed the board and corrupted the firmware but surely- that would still give a blinking cursor on screen at startup and I'm getting nothing:(

Have you tried resetting the cmos? Also try removing any hardware not required to boot the computer and try booting up that way. If it still won't work then you have a bad motherboard most likely.

Where is the CMOS bat on a toshiba a100-306 lappy?

CMOS wasn't the problem....BIOS was!!

My mate sent it off(the laptop) to his contact who resets BIOS which cost £25.00 and then afterwards when it came back, my mate found RAM issues that were 'intermittent' which I never even knew were causing issues or even if they happened at same time as BIOS problems??

Anyway- all fixed now and all for the VERY nice price of £52.00:good:
