CoD4 Problem

I am getting this error when I try to run CoD4.
"ERROR: couldn't initialize digital driver: DirectSoundCreate ( ) failed in get_system_speaker_configuration ( )"

Then after that, "Miles sound system initialization failed. Make sure you have your sound card's latest drivers and DirectX installed."

They show up in a Call of Duty 4 Command Prompt, after I click the Call of Duty 4 icon on my Desktop.

I installed both my OnBoard sound, and my DirectX updates, and restarted.

I downloaded Call of Duty 4 through Steam.

Do I need the game to run, in order to host an online server?

And would a soundcard work?

The server is on Windows XP Pro, with OnBoard Audio, and a 7900GS.

Thanks.

Well atleast I got to the menu and pressed new game. Then my game just freezes and when i press enter, it shuts down the game. I think it's also a DX9 problem.
