If your track ball is becoming sluggish, turn it over and push on the ball
from below. It will pop out. Then you can clean it off and also clean inside the pedestal as well. Lint collects in there and needs to be wiped out with a cloth or a piece of paper. The lint slows down the function of the ball.

It's a given with all trackball mice. And yes, people still use them.
