yeah when i was your age I picked up an old Compaq Proliant server. it was awesome

that server was a good deal. fans are normally loud. normal.

What you doing with it? linux would maybe be a good option, NAS or LAMP server or something. Put SSH on it, and use it headless.

Also, Bear in mind that a RAM upgrade for servers is costly as it needs registered RAM.

p.s you know that a DVD drive for that will cost a fortune (slimline one)
and also windows server + CALs cost a fortune

shipping was expensive?

is it legit? that case is worth $200 alone lol

Well right now im just glad i have it :D. i think i will just test out windows servers. i have tried a few (isa, ad, sccm) [i have technet so i can get most to test for free]. Also no i live by the silicon valley store so i just drove up there and picked it up.

yeah i looked at ram, luckaly the one i got has 6 bays so i can put 6 GB in ther kinda of cheep ($42 for a ECC registered pc2700 ram, altho 2 GB is like $200 and i think 6GB will be fine)

last the slim drives have come down in price ($40 ish) but for now i had a dud dell laptop i will just take the cd drive out of.

also it is legit. i have it running, did some tests, it is the prossesor it says it comes with (windows says it has 4 cores i guess because of the hyperthreading) The only think i cant seem to get is the freeking screws off the mount for the server rack, i need to get to a screw behind it to install my cd drive and i cant remove the screws...

yeah are they those hex screws? compaq/hp use those.

Server 2003, 2008 or what?

I use 2k on my old compaq, basically provides DNS/DHCP/WINS/Active Directory/File&print Sharing to my Home LAN.

Well for now 2008 just because i dont have a cd drive and server 2008 is the only one that i can easly install using pxe

?

i thaught you could do any server OS that way?

Ive deployed windows 2000 servers using RIS before (RIS has become WDS now)

really, i thought you had to install the os onto a computer, back it up then deploy it, for the server 2008 i just had to take the install.wim file from the disk.

also do you know what the name is of the slim dvd drive port to an ide interface is called?

thats if you are using sysprep

with 2000 and RIS (and i assume 2003 / WDS as well) you install RIS/WDS or whatever and when you run the configuration wizard, it will adjust your dhcp server and whatnot for netbooting. All you have to do is point it at where the windows files are (works sort of similar to nlite). Then you boot the client with PXE and provide a valid domain logon and password and it will run a diskless windows install and add the machine to the domain.

also know any server (not the os server but server appt) that would be usefull learning. mind you i have used AD, isa, and sccm

I've been thinking about getting a server for my home for movies, music, documents and whatnot. That's a good fina and I'll keep it in mind!

wow good price....i was looking around on that site and they still sell Intel 386 & 486 processors! :D
