change icon on desk top

I want to change the icon for a directory on the desk top. Didn't like the ones i have available. Its a picture that was used on a website related to hunting.
I saved it and the extension says gif. tried and didn't work. changed to jpg and didn't work. So question is how do i use it. I know i can click on the directory on the desktop then properties then change but not what i wanted.

Another example a icon i wanted to use for a directory with pdf files for a 4G Android cell phone. Looks like the right size. What do i call it or name it for use.

You have to use a .ico file. You can use this website to create it. I don't know why you can't natively create them with MS paint or something... but you can't.

I look at it. It was a ico file. When i chose it to change it said no icons available.
Thanks. I will check out what ya said. Seen something at microsoft and said no larger than 256 x 256. resized and could not find it when changing the icon. None available.
