Cell Phone keyboard

Can anyone recommend a keyboard to replace the one that came with my cell phone (which is a Sanyo Kyocera with an Android application by Cricket)?

The main problem with the electronic keyboard is it sticks. I'm also looking for some extra features (such as boldfacing, italics and underlining).

After so much use, keys do start to not work correctly. I've had to replace a few phones because of bad keys, mostly motorola nextel phones.

To let you know

I picked up my phone a week ago and the keyboard is electronic meaning I have a touch screen for the keyboard. The store rep recommended I download another keyboard (which apparently he did himself).

If the phone is defective, I'll try to get it replaced, otherwise I'll go for a different keyboard (which are cheap enough).

You can download different keyboards for the Android. I use Swiftkey X for example. The Swype keyboard seems to be really popular, too. They're all available from the market.

Bold/italics are something that rely on the font and whether or not a given program allows for them, the keyboard is just the input method it does not decide what comes out.

That being said I'd recommend looking into whether or not Swype is available for your particular flavor of Android. It's my preferred input method on a touchscreen, it takes a bit to get used to but allows for much faster typing.

What he said. For example, use the full internet version of hotmail or gmail and you'll be able to use bold/italics.

Update (thank you)

Through experimentation I've learned that tapping twice on the magnifying glass icon on the cell phone gets rid of the keyboard efficiently so I no longer have a sticky keyboard problem.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.

Ah, when you said sticky keyboard I thought the keypresses were buggy. Hitting the back button should make the keyboard go away.

It's a good suggestion, but the catch is that it can make the entire screen disappear. I use that maneuver as my last resort if the magnifying glass key fails to work (can someone explain to me more about the magnifying glass key on the far right-hand side of the phone such as what is it called and its purpose?)

It's the search key. Hitting in on the main screen should bring up your default search engine, holding it should start Google Voice Search.
