Can't share printer on network

Hey all,

I'm trying to connect my laptop on a home network so I can share a printer in the other room. I have installed the printer software and I have tried just about everything I can think of to print something. Every time I try to print it says that the printer is not responding, and yes the printer is turned on :P . Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance!

1. where does it say the printer is not responding?
2. Which OS?
3. What Printer?
4. What kind of network? wireless?
5. which computer says its not responding? ur laptop or the other comp the printer is hooked up to?
6. Can u print from the comp the printer is connected too?

EDIT: by the way, if the printer is connected to another comp and not directly on the network, the main computer (the one the printer is hooked up to) has to be on for it to work, and connected to the network.

1.) It displays the message in the printing window pop up on the bottom right of the screen. It shows a picture of a printer and a message in a box that says "Printer is not responding."
2.) All computers are Windows XP
3.) Canon i450
4.) Yes I'm on a wireless network with my laptop but everyone else is on a wired connection through a router.
5.) My laptop says it is not responding.
6.) Yes everyone can print from the computer that the printer is hooked up to. My girlfriend's brother who is connected via a cable to his laptop in another room can print from the printer.

Yes the printer and all the computers in the house (including the one that the printer is connected to) are all on and the computer is on the network. How can you tell if the printer is on the network? I know it has it's own and name and stuff. Thanks for replying by the way :)

ok, while i work on an answer for you, have u tried restarting the printer and computer the printer is directly connected to so it can complete its driver installation, etc? and restarted the laptop too?

No I haven't restarted the computer that the printer is hooked up to. I have restarted the printer though and my laptop, but I'll do it again just to make sure. Thanks again.

I just restarted my laptop, the printer, and the computer with the printer attached to it and I'm still getting the same error message.

hmmm.......it sounds like it may be a driver issue then. did u use winxp to set up the networked printer? look under setting up the network and look for drivers that need to be installed for winxp users.

Is it just your laptop that is having problems using the printer? It seems like you guys have explored the driver issue already so i am going to play the devil's advocate and go in another direction. With your laptop, are you able to see other computers shared files? Are all of the computers within the same workgroup? I am not sure if you need to be in the same workgroup to see a shared printer over the network, which is why I am suggesting this.

No I can't see the oter computers on the network from my laptop, how would I go about doing this?

Every computer is running XP except for a computer down stairs which is running 98 and is on the network.

Well i have had this issue and it not too hard to fix. Type the name of the computer the printers are on like this \\name\ in internet explorer on a computer that you want to see the printers. If nothing is there id have to know what security programs are running on all the comps

well...make shure you have the same default gate way and other addresses except the ip address...go to view network connections then right click on LAN then click properties then click on alternate config...on 1 of the computers that work w/the printer go to start/run type in cmd then type ipconfig /all ...then make shure your laptop has the same default gateway and subnet mask address and where it says ip address enter the first three numbers the same but the last # has to be 1 that isnt used by any others on the network so just use a high #...

hopefully this helps
