Cant see crossover LAN

I have two Win98 SE machines. One of them has an onboard LAN port (MOB ASUS A7v8X-MX) and the other one has a National Semiconductors PCI 10/100 card. Both connected with a crossover cable.

I configured a simple NetBeui network to share files (I have Microsoft Client, the NetBeui protocol and File and printer sharing installed on both machines Network Properties).

I still can´t see the other computer in the network neighborhood.

Apparently everything is OK since both link lights are lit, should I try with another cable in case mine is broken ? Should I download an update ?
Please help !!

1. check is it definatly a crossover cable the colouring should be differnet @ each end

2. are the ip's in the same class e.g in laymans term

computer 1 - IP address - 192.168.1.1
subnet mask - 255.255.255.0

computer 2 - IP address - 192.168.1.2
subnet mask - 255.255.255.0

3. are the workgroups the same name e.g if its called WORKGROUP etc both machines should have the same name

4. [/b]is there a Firewall? if so create permissions for each ip and subnnet
if not? grand try step 5 below

5.ping the loopback test on both machines to see if network card is functioning

go to msdos command prompt @ the prompt

C:> type in the prompt

ping 127.0.0.1

try this on both computers you should get a reply if everything is in order

6. TRY pinging computer 1 from computer 2 and vice versa

do the same as 5 only on computer 1 type:

ping 192.168.1.2

and computer 2 type:

ping 192.168.1.1

7. Still not working Why not TRY TCP/IP ??? with same procedure as above

I´ll try as soon as I get home.

Should I have the tcp/ip protocol installed to make the ping tests ? I have installed only NetBEUI so far...

Thanks

you should be able to id go with TCP/IP personally and get rid of netbeui or make TCP/IP your default

plus get the IPs and go to Start Run and open an ip with //(place ip here) if you can don't worry about it. ping the IPs with start run CMD ping (place ip here) and try a ping 127.0.0.1 (LOOP)
