Hi

For some reason or the other I'm unable to play any sound. Be it MP3, Games, Cool Edit, etc.
The sound control has also disappeared.

This is the prompt I get:
DirectSound v2.42 (d) error.
Bad DirectSound driver.

Its a PC used for music production purposes mainly, I would really appreciate your help.

Well it is a driver issue.
  • Have you recently updated the driver???
  • How long has it been working for???
  • What is your OS??
  • Have you tried reinstalling the driver??

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi on XP.

Haven't updated the driver. Its been working fine for the past 2 or 3 years.

I tried installing XP as the final option last night and it wouldn't do it, this the prompt i got;
"The file iaStor.sys could not be found."

Is DirectSound v2.42 to do with my sound card? or part of the computer?
I downloaded one or two DirectX files claiming to have the DirectSound driver in it (from Microsoft) and still the same problem.
I also re-installed the installation CD for the X-Fi.

When I go to Sounds + Devices all options (including the apply button) are "grayed out" and all devices are stated as "Working properly".

It happened after I installed a freeware screen recording program.
Tried installing a Virus + Trojan scanner and that wouldn't install neither.

I would do a system restore back to a day it was working fine. Otherwise you'll have to do a fresh install. Iastor.sys references a raid driver. Are you running a raid configuration?

Yeah thats the 1st thing I've done. But still got the same problem, thats why I think it might a hardware issue, even though its marked as working fine.

Whats a raid driver?
