Can't load MS Office 2007 in Linux Mint

I've installed Wine and then proceeded to install MS Office 2007, which installed without any errors on Linux Mint 11. Whenever I try to open any of the Office 2007 products through the menu with Wine I get a message that simply says "Error: File not found". I can only open the programs if I open up "Computer" and browse to user/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office12 and click on an .exe in there (WINWORD.EXE for example will open with no errors at all). I created a link to the .exe file and placed it on the desktop but when I click on it nothing happens. Why is it that I can only open up these programs from the Office12 folder?

Do you guys think the latest version of Ubuntu is better? A quick Google search tells me that many people have Office 2007 and even Office 2010 installed on it without problems and Linux Mint is running a little slow, would Ubuntu run faster? I'll probably end up installing it anyways just to try it out.

PS: I tried to go to the Mint forums but they wouldn't load so I couldn't post there :/

I prefer Mint instead of Ubuntu. This has nothing to do with the OS, but everything to do with wine. Check the version number, and read this:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=4992
Step by step instructions, and like i said, it has known issues with certain versions of wine.

Alternatively, Install playonlinux and install with that.

If neither of those work, let me know, and tell me which exact version of mint your using and I'll boot up a VM with one and try it myself. Been meaning to reinstall mint anyway.

Thanks for the reply, I looked at the link you gave me and I have a version of wine that is not in the list of known regressions. I actually have winetricks installed, so I didn't have to install that .dll it told me to after installing MS office. I downloaded and installed winetricks from the application manager in Mint 11, I just did a search for "wine" and downloaded the first thing.

I know that problem is not with the OS but with wine, but I will try Ubuntu anyways and see how I like that OS, Mint 11 is kind of slow on my laptop anway and occasionally freezes.

I have it installed on a Dell Inspiron 6000, specs are in the screenshot below

Below are screenshots of wine that is installed on the laptop.

It's probably because I'm used to working on my other faster computers (this thread tells me that my laptop is just fine with it's specs)that I find this laptop a little slow, but it's not that bad. I'm just going to use it for browsing and writing notes until a get a newer faster one.

The current version of Wine should work just fine with office 2007. I have it running on Ubuntu 10.04 right now. I had to add the riched20 override to get the programs to run correctly. Try adding that in the libraries tab in the wine configuration menu.

I added the riched20 override and it didn't help. I reinstalled wine and then installed playonlinux. How do I install MS Office with playonlinux? When I right click on setup.exe for Office I have an option to "Open With Wine Windows Program Loader". Do I install it with Wine and then use playonlinux to run it? Sorry I'm new to all this.

I havent used PlayOnLinux for a while but from what I remember you need to go to install a program from the PlayOnLinux GUI. From the list there should be Office 2007. You should then be able to navigate to the Office installer from there

Okay, I had all the files on a USB stick (I moved the contents to a folder on the desktop) and PlayOnLinux was asking me to insert the CD-ROM, I just kept pressing "Forward" and it told me that MS Office was installed even though it wasn't. What would the path be to the desktop? Something like "home/user/Desktop/MS Office2007". MS Office2007 is the folder with all the files and the setup.exe in it.

Also, everytime I start up PlayOnLinux, this windows appears:

I click on run and install but nothing happens... how do I install the latest version or get rid of this window?

I thought I remember that you could also browse for the file in PlayOnLinux but I havent used it in a while.

I used to get that update a lot too. I was looking for a terminal command that will update it for you but I haven't found one yet. :(

I see from the picture there is an install and a run option. Try the run option and browse to setup.exe maybe that will help get past the CD part that was giving you trouble

Clicking on Run or Install just starts up the PlayOnLinux GUI. I can't find an option for browsing to the setup.exe. I will just install Ubuntu as it seems everyone has had no problem installing office on it with wine.

Hi Adonis

I am new comer to Linux Mint and my version is 13 (maya). I was using Ubuntu until a few days ago. I was trying to install MS Office (on a flash drive) through PlayonLinux. But I am getting an error message that error reading the file. I used the same software to install it on Ubuntu.

Can you please help me?
