i have just bought a new computer and i am having problems hearing system sounds

i can hear sounds like windows media player and my dvd player but i cant hear the system sounds like the login sound or alert sounds. i can't hear internet explorer sounds like youtube either.

thanks for the help

Goto CONTROL PANEL and SOUNDS and AUDIO DEVICE (or something like that) under the sound tab and SOUND SCHEME check there is Windows Defalt and not "no sounds" and also try playing it. As for Youtube is the volume up?

i checked all that already and still no luck..

what i did figure out was that this problem only happens to my speakers.. but when i plug in headphones i can hear all the sounds fine

very weird and thanks for the reply

Quite odd, try going to Volume Control (Start > all programs > Accessories > Entertainment) and OPTIONS > PROPERTIES > enable all > OK and then turn them all up. HTH.

*EDIT* - make sure non are on mute.

plugging the speakers in the back, and my headphones in the front. the speakers can only go in the back and the headphones can only go in the front. just a reminder that i still can hear windows media player and dvds on my speakers - just not internet or system sounds. so i think its most likely a computer problem than a hardware problem

Try speakers in the front and they SHOULD work, maybe you could try a driver update, how long has this problem occured and what have you done since then?

i had this computer since yesterday. it's been like this since i got it. i cant plug my speakers in the front cause theres only 1 jack for headphones and my speakers take up 3 jacks which are all in the back. i guess ill call the people where i got my computer from tomorrow

Do you have Intergrated sound or a Soundcard?

If so have you tried uninstaling the sound drivers and downloading the latest ones then re-installing them to see if it makes any differance?
