Canon EOS 450D help

The AF on my 18-55mm lens doesn't work. It won't take a photo nor focus at all. It works fine on MF and without the lens on. I haven't updated the firmware, do you think this would resolve the issue or is the lens totally broke?

Well there is really only so much you can test, but lets give them a go.
- I take it you've turned the camera off and on a few times with no difference.
- Have you tried unmounting the lens and remounting it?
- I take it your batteries are fully charged? Might want to throw them back in the charger to make sure.
- You can try updating the firmware, but if it worked before, then I don't see this solving the issue.

Hopefully one of those helps,
Bob

i already did the first two solutions you mentioned. the batteries are fully charged, so should i charge it some more? this is the first time that it has happened so i'll try updating the firmware tomorrow. i don't have much time right now as i'm finishing editing a wedding video.

There really is no way for me to say, do you have another lens you can test?
If not just drop by your local camera store and they can tell you whats wrong.

i do not have another lens with me.

i'm still stumped on how this happened... the camera has never been dropped or been roughly used.

well just to let you guys know. i had my 18-55mm lense checked at a canon service center. they did a diagnostic and all it needed was cleaning. O_O i got my lense back a week ago and works perfectly now.

if this happens again just clean the gold plates between on both the camera and the lens with a dry screen wipe or glasses cloth (clean cotton t-shirt if you have to)

i have to believe that that's all the people at the shop did its those small gold contacts that keep all of the electronic connection between camera and lens so any dirt on them will just stop the lens from doing anything at all.
