Can the signal being improved?

I recently spent a few days in hospital and I took my laptop with me which has a wireless card. The hospital have got a wireless connection so people could use their computers if they were wireless, or just use a LAN cable. Whereas I could get a weak signal from the actual ward every now and then, it really wasn't good enough to use the Internet, you would have to go up to the computer room to get it properly. I only really had to move around 20 feet to pick up a reasonably good signal. Are there any gadgets on the market that enhanced the incoming signal to the computer? If I have to go into hospital again, I would like to know that if I have to stay in bed for any period of time, I could still use my computer in bed. Being a radio ham, I am very familiar with preamps, surely there must be something made for a computer.

Not really unless you get another card or modify the antenna inside the laptop. Or have more powerful antenna's installed around the hospital :P

There is something called the Wi-Fire from hField that extends your wireless signal to give you better coverage. A fairly new development I remember reading on engadget not too long ago.

The link is www.hfield.com I believe
