I can not use my secondary computer to do wifi stuff for anything other than internet . Why? How to resolve for file sharing and printer sharing ?

Mothership computer has WinXP and Motorola WiFi Router Model # WR 850G . WinXP in this system has been set to "share this printer ".

Secondary computer has Win XP , Motorola PCI adaptor Model # PCI 1810G.

Secondary computer will get online to the internet through the WiFi. It can not send a print job by wifi , it can not see other computer's files. Neither computer can see the other.

Mothership computer shows in the lower right hand corner task bar : 2 overlapping computers Local Area Connection , status reads " Connected " .

Secondary computer displays the same 2 computers, but with a red X over them, plus it displays a single computer with radio waves coming from it, says STATUS : Connected.

Mothership Motorola router was reset with Motorola tech support to hide the broadcast and the secondary computer's PCI card was reset to capture the hidden transmission. Hence , I get internet.

I originally thought that WinXP in the 2nd computer would find the mothership computer and talk to the mothership computer to function as a print server . It does not happen.

I have tried to have the secondary computer find the mothership broadcast . A message pops up : "Windows can not configure this connection."

Additionally, when I click "REPAIR CONNECTION" , a messsage appears : "TCP/ IP is not enabled for this connection". I thought that Motorola tech support helped me take care of that.

Any guidance as to how to proceed ?

Motorola tech support said that the PCI Adaptor card does not have the capability of acting as a "go between to the mothership computer" . When Motorola tech support learned that I could access the internet , the support stopped. I was under the impression that they would walk me through setting up a complete wifi system.

A computer repair tech said that Motorola was not reliable and that Linksys brand was the answer.

I don't know enough.

Your computers dont talk to each other.. they talk to the router, and router makes file sharing possible. If you want to connect to the other pc you just need a folder sharded (right click and folder or HD and go file and printer sharing). Check the workgroup make sure they are in the same one (right click my computer and click the workgroup button). Then click my network places and click view netowkr computers. Do you see 2 computers? (the one your on and the other?)

If you dont you can just go to a folder or an internet explorer window and type in //computername or //localip

for example //mothership if mother ship is the name of the computer you wish to try to access... or if you know the local ip you can use that //192.168.2.1
To find the local ip go to the start menu, run and type "cmd" in the dos prompt type "ipconfig" the local ip is the one which is labeled "ip address"

understand?

Trying to follow your steps .

Both computers have same name of workgroup , NOW they do .

Mothership will see client computer and itself in the workgroup.
The secondary client computer will see mothership and itself in the workgroup.

Could not get the printer to function under the print command of the secondary client computer .

I used the advise found in the Sept 2004 thread " connection to shared printer " and reset the secondary default printer as the " shared printer " . This did it .

Thanks for the guidance , as I did not have workgroup setup correctly.
