Can I Use a Server as a PC?

Servers are like really fast and expencive pc right? So what i want to do is but a cheap Pentium III server that i can put a few processors in to make one fast pc. Is this possible? Oh and i want to transcode video and play gemes (it may not be the best but it might be ok).

Thanks,
Mike

Server's are typically slower than desktops but more reliable. Multi processors won't really help you out with anything unless you have software that utilzes it. Though it might be a fun project, you could probably build a cheaper system with new parts and be much better off.

well ive built a desktop computer with server parts, but i kind of overlooked the memmory the board takes, so im now boulding a new single processor desktop with faster ram...

i do belive that this computer is very stable and does not hangup crash etc etc just like the other one says

"Server's are typically slower than desktops but more reliable"

No you will not be able to play much games on the PIII cause the server probably doesn't have a video card, and even if it does, it's probably a very old one.

Lol good servers are not slower then PCs. Yes servers are just PCs with higher quolity parts.

Servers have 1,2,4,8 CPUs (more can be installed but this is only high end)
Have faster and more HDs - it is common to see servers with 2-12 HDs that can be removed while its turned on.

more memory slots and higher limits. Its not uncomon for a decent server to have 8-16 slots for ram. Also some server have the ability add memory chips while server is turned on.

Servers focus on well tested quolity parts that are both fast and stable.

If you plan on running server apps, yes a server would be nice. If you want it to be your home computer then no. Its more cost effective to buy a nice PC then a used server.

Ummm. Vise versa, could i use my old P4 system as a server? I need to get the internet connection all worked out. Anyway, since i just built this new computer, i was gonna save my old one, since its still a really good computer, and see if i couldnt run it as a server. Specs:

Pentium 4 Northwood 2.66ghz/133mhz non-HTT

ASUS P4P800

512MB Single Channel DDR500

GeForce 6800nu 128MB

75gig IBM 7,200rpm Ultra IDE

Would this be good enough to run as a server? All im gonna use it for is my site, or if it works, sites. I have software i can install on it, CWI Panel.

I would say that would make a pretty decent server, especially if you are only running one site off it, My old p3 wasn't actually bad as a server, i had it doing everything - print, file, web, mysql, ftp etc. And it never slowed down to a greatly noticeable level, and processed PHP pages (not basic, quite advanced stuff) very well. So I can't see any reason why your PC wouldn't work well, the only thing that would let it down would be your internet connection.

Ok thanks.

Well, nvm. My step-dad said that i would have to buy my own internet if i wanna use it as a server, and if thats the case ill just buy a server for a monthly fee. He says im already "robbing" all the bandwidth. Which im not sure how, ill get on his computer sometime to see what his connection is, but mine is 1.5-2Mbps.

So, im planning on selling my old computer, i think ill price it around $300. I need to buy a PSU for it, and pry a new case, the old one looks crappy.

you can use any hardware as a PC

I have a few older P3 enterprise servers (older Dell poweredges) and older desktops i use as servers at home. They work just fine.

Using a server does not mean you will be taking up bandwidth. What do you plan on using this server for? just for webpages .. thats plenty and unless you are having alot of ppl connect its just fine to share bandwidth.

Well, my step-dad gets anal bout EVERYTHING. It doesnt matter what it is, if he notices that his bandwidth is 1kb/s slower then 5 secs ago he will yell at me about it. But yea, i dont see how it would rob all our bandwidth, right now i only have 1 site i want to host on it. Maybe 3-4 tops if i got it going.

By the way, the link in my sig is the site i want to host. Its entire file is about 2-3mb.
