NEVER MIND. I'VE DECIDED TO BUY A SWITCH OR ROUTER.
hi all. i'm new to networking (and this site). i have an asus a8n sli premium motherboard. it has 2 ethernet ports in case you didn't know. i'm wondering if i can get internet to another computer through one of the ports. also would i be able to transfer files and use the same printer through that port?
thanks in advance.

Yes. Its very possible. You have to share the internet connection via the network connection panel, and setup a network vie the network setup icon in control panel.

how do i do all that? btw, i have xp pro. o yeah, almost forgot. what would the speed be like on the 2nd pc's internet. (i would wanna have games going on both at the same time.)

and the 2nd pc would be able to use the printer?

Yes, it would.
Goto Control Panel>network setup and complete it according to your system. Run it on both computers.

do i need to use a crossover cable or just normal ethernet cable?
does the 1st pc need to be on and everything for the 2nd to use printer and/or internet?

An ethernet cable works just fine. The second computer will have printer and internet.
To share the internet, go under network connections, and right click the internet connection and select property. I cant remeber what tab to go under, but one of the tabs has an option to share the internet connection.
