Can browsers go bad or get corrupted?

Greetings.

My download speed varies greatly - anywhere from 750 kbs to 10 kbs. I use a wireless modem and have ruled out any problems with my service provider, viruses, clutter in my p.c., someone piggybacking on my wireless signal etc.

I now wonder if the problem is the browser. I use Mozilla Firefox.

Not only does the speed vary greatly, but there are times when it seems to " freeze" at the beginning of the download or somewhere in the middle. I then have to hit the pause button and then hit the resume button to unfreeze it.

If this is the problem, would uninstalling the old one and re-installing a new one solve the problem? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

There are many different factors that can cause your issue. Browser corruption, modem needs reset, malware infections, internet issue, bad drivers. Try using another system and see if the it acts just like yours does. If not, then you know its your system.

I agree with Mark4_4, with the emphasis on "try". Assuming you have a PC, then you have IE. Try that for a few days to get an overall comparison across the same variety of sites.

You don't say whether this issue is new or has always been. When you download, speed depends hugely on what and where you are downloading from.

Your rates are presumably kilobytes not kilobits as you indicated?
