Can Anyone Help ?

Hi, I'm new. I've never owned a computer before and really don't know that much about them...I always use the one at my local library to surf the net. I've been thinking about going into the eBay selling business as I can't find a regular job right now. I will need to buy my own computer to do this sort of thing so can anyone tell me what kind of computer I should buy? I can't spend more than $350.00. Will an all-in-one do it for me? Does that have enough memory? I probably won't be listing more than 50 items to sell at first. Is a re-furbished one a good idea as that will be in my price range? Thanks for taking the time to read this !

A all in one will work fine for you. It depends on the all in one, but most have at least 2 GB of memory, and a 500 GB HDD. Try to find a All in One from Dell or Asus or Acer with a AMD or Intel CPU, including A4, A6, A8, A10, Pentium, i3, i5, or the i7 (there will be a sticker on the computer that says it has one of these), don't get any other CPU besides these. Refurbished will work fine for you.

Thanks for the info! ....will look into these brands :)

I would go Hp over Acer any day, but that is just from experience on this forum and from repairing computers.

HP's alright.

Really, there's not a lot of difference between them. Though yeah, ASUS and Dell are two of the best brands.

HP is kind of the worst brand here based off the opinions of many people here, who deal with HPs all the time. Stick with Asus or Dell.

It depends on the Dell. I have seen hundreds of those old Dell Optiplexs in libraries and schools, and they last a very long time.

@ $350 HP sucks. Dell sucks. If you are talking about a tower there really isn't a big different between any of them. Personally, stay far away from all in ones. Can't deal with the heat. I see far too many all in ones have HDDs go out because it was just cooked by the other internals.

With the smaller budget see if there are any local second hand deals that you can get. They are likely to have some software installed already. MS office is really expensive and will not come on a new PC from the store. Post some that you find here and we can help you sort out the good deals from the bad ones.

All in one desktops look the part but they're a pest to upgrade and they're a pest to work on too when/if you need to take them apart for any reason.

So now I found one I'm thinking of ordering from Rakuten. It is a refurbished Dell optiplex gx620 (GX620AIO500GBXP) has Pentium 4 2 GB RAM 500 GBHDD for $195 does this sound like a good choice? Will it work on dsl? Or is broadband better? THANKS GUYS !

LoL people come on! :D
A guy just said he NEVER owned a computer.
And all he needs is a computer to sell things on eBay.That's it lol! :D

So let's make ALL THIS very simple lol.
I have a computer which is 15 freaking years old lol and I perform programming miracles on it and it works so damn great.
So let's be honest...TODAY the WEAKEST,but completely NEW computers (including laptops) are at least 20 times better and stronger than my 15 years old computer.

Do I have to say more?

So come on lol...he does NOT need to spend so much money on a computer (wether it is desktop computer or laptop) which has 500 GB HDD,2 or 4 GB of RAM,strong CPU and so on...
Because that would be a big waste of money lol considering that he will be using the computer for SO DAMN SIMPLE TASKS SUCH AS SELLING ON EBAY lol. :P

He clearly said:

"I've never owned a computer before and really don't know that much about them..."

"I've been thinking about going into the eBay selling business as I can't find a regular job right now..."

So considering all this,if I were him,I would NOT waste more than 100 dollars on a computer. He also said:

"I can't spend more than $350.00..."

So spending 100 dollars or LESS will save him 250.00 dollars or MORE (considering will he pay for the computer 100 dollars or less).

Now what will he do with the beautiful remaining 250.00 dollars or more?
I have NO IDEA,but they surely will come in handy until he finds a job or starts earning nice money by selling on eBay. ;)

I know that all of you (not squegee) LIKE having strong computers with a lot of RAM,huge HDD,good SSD drives, strong CPU and so on...
So in that case spend all the money you want on it if you REALLY want it lol.
But squegee does not need that if you ask me...

Come on lol...

And here are some great choices for you which are 100 dollars or LESS:

thanks for the advice...you seem like a very logical person...once I get into to making more money then I can invest in something higher up on the totem pole. I still like the one I've picked out. That is what we have here in the public library also...there must be 200 Dell all-in-one computers here.

http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-660/pd?oc=fdpxru08b&model_id=inspiron-660

This is what I would recommend...people bash dell, we have over 50 dells ranging from dimension 5150s, e520s and 521s to vostro 220s and 230s and above....only issues have been maybe a failed PSU or two and thats been a strong run....id say this machine would be closer to the vostro 230 but stronger...has plenty of ram and harddrive, very good for a beginning system and a steal at 400 bucks. i know you said 350 but the 350 dollar towers were small form factors, and this would give you the oppertunity to upgrade the psu and drop in a gpu if you decided to do such, which would be my only ideal upgrades in the future with the machine :)

I wouldn't recommend for someone that knows as little about computers as you claim to buy a used computer from Ebay. A used computer from Ebay is an iffy proposition and you could easily end up with someone else's problems.

The refurbished unit you found on Rakuten sounds like a good computer for you to start out with. If money is really tight, then there are some less expensive models on Rakuten that would also work for you such as: http://www.rakuten.com/prod/dell-optiplex-gx620-desktop-computer-refurbished-intel-pentium-4-2-80/227010374.html?listingId=229766637

2 big advantages of buying from Rakuten vs Ebay are that they offer free shipping and a 60 day warranty. Most Ebay sellers don't offer either of those.
