im getting ready to move and be able to have Cable internet for the first time. i have had RCA Model # DCm235 for a few months just cause, the company said i can use mine or buy theres (not sure what they have).

what im wanting to know is if there is a differance asfar as speed/bandwidth/reliability when compairing cheap (mine) and higher priced ones.

thanks for info and help

Found this pic of my router online... http://www.simplehelp.net/images/cable_modems/rca_dcm225.gif

i just looked it up, if it's docsis complaint (it has to be) then it's capable of 38mbps downstream

service in my area is 3mbs (cheap) 5mbs (standard) or 8mbs (business class)

so it doesn't matter which you get

well, it depends on what you want to do with it

for a little extra, i got a wcg200 by linksys, which is a cable modem, 4 port ethernet hub, and a wireless-g router all in one, so it saves on buying a router and a wireless hub later on.....

and it was the same price as the motorola surfboard

ya i have 2 wrt54g's from linksys and one that is not wireless, so imonly worried about the modem itself.

mostly just wondering if there was a diff between the higher priced and the lower priced i.e... being able to get more out of it, like maybe the "better ones will allow me to get higher speeds or something.

thanks again for your help guys.

only difference is if you were gonna uncap, which i wouldn't recommend

a) your neighbors will be sad :(

and

b) they actually catch people for doing it

lol, i assumeing that "uncap" is to tap into there service. and meh dont think they would knowtice and or mind :D

ya, it's basically stealing someone else's speed cap packets

it's not very ethical, not to mention, the most expensive cable package here is $70, and well worth the money (8mbps)

it might be a different story if the cable company was a monster and charged 100's for fast service

heyman where do you live? I get 8mbps for 39/month and can upgrade to 10 for 49/month. Also, that is an asychronous connection. Business class has a lot higher upload speed.

akron ohio

3mbps is $29, 5mbps is $39 and i believe 8mbps is $69

those are prices without cable service, tho. i have internet ONLY

the price is basically cut in half if you have cable service, as well

hmm for just cable in southern kansas it is 45$ for the 6D/1up. and i think 59$ for the 9D/1up. so ya... dont really need to ninja someones net :D
