hello,
I have a cable modem and a wireless router in the basement. I have two desktop computers one in the basement and the other on the second floor.
well I bought a wireless network card and placed it in my desktop computer in the second floor and the connection is really BAD and slow. sometimes i am connected and sometimes I am not. It goes on and off and it's really slow when I am connected. Is there a way to get an excellent connection on the second floor with a wireless card? it's usually very poor on the modem status bar. do I need to buy something?

You need to place the router in the basement in a location which can provide a better signal to your new wireless card. Just try to keep Aluminum wall, stone walls (bricks) or cement from getting between the signal. Try placing it next to the door going to the basement, or the best line of sight. If that doesnt work let us know. You do have some options if that dont work.

Which wireless card did you purchase and which router do you have? Some wireless cards are just plain waste of money, while some works magnificently. Also, if there are other wireless networks in your neighborhood, try switching the channels to a different channel.

i can't move the router. i have the dlink 802.11g 2.4 ghz wireless router and a linksys 2.4 ghz network card with speedbooster, best in the market. anything I can buy to improve it?
It's a crime to change to other peoples channels. I want to use mine

To fully use the speedbooster you will need the speedbooster router from linksys, so that feature is basically a waste.
You must be thinking of stealing someone else's wifi, but not the actual wireless chanels. However, I mean the channels of your wifi signal. There are 11 channels, usually it's on 6 as default, change the channels to something different so as to not cause any interference if you have wifi all around you.

Other than that, it could be issues with the wifi card and your router being they are different brands. Have you tried getting a dlink wifi card? If everything works, great; if not, return the card.

I am going to buy a dlink card. But how do I change the channels? there is a way to do that? and does that improve connection?

If you want to take advantage of speedbooster, you should buy a Linksys Router with speedbooster.

You change the channels on the router, by entering the IP of it. It should tell you the default IP in the manual.
