Buying PC questions

1) When a website lists computers as either "Gaming PC" or "MultiMedia/Gaming PC". The difference between two catagories is purely hardware and cost? and the software is equal?

2) XP or Vista?

3) If a website overclocked a processor to 3.0GHz, that processor is now a 3.0GHz processor?

4) What's a network adaptor?

5) nVidia or ATI? (Gaming wise) (If they are both virutally equal say that)

6) If a pc specification matches a computer game specification in terms of processor, graphics card and ram. The game will definitely play on the pc?

2. Vista but id buy the Windows 7 update pre-order only $50
3. Pretty much though its still considered x process just overclocked to 3.0ghz speeds.
4. I would wager internet but not 100% sure
5. Personal preference...I prefer Nvidia for better drivers.
6. Long as it meets the recommended and not the minimum...minimum means it will run...not that it will run well.

2. XP. Vista is crap. It's the worst Microsoft OS. In fact, ppl who has knowledge about OS tend to downgrade Vista to XP.

4. Network adapter or network card is what u use to connect ur comp to a network (might be LAN or the Internet).
5. NVIDIA for gaming for sure.
6. It will run definately. Some games can even run on comp which has hardware below minimum requirements. Ofc it will slow as hell and u will have to give up all the effects. I know it cuz I've done it.
 
In terms of OS I am choosing between the following;

Windows Vista Home Basic (32bit Version)
Windows Vista Home Basic (64bit Version)
Windows XP Home Service Pack 3 (32bit Version)
 
1) multimedia/gmaing is more of a hybrid for visuals instead of processing power i believe
2) xp if you dont want any bugs, vista if you want bugs, windows7 if you want bugs you cant see

3) yes
4) connects you to interwebz or lan

5) nvidia
6)hahahaha, thats minimum requirements meaning, you play the game at minimum, ergo sucks...

as for the os only go for a 64bit edition, bettor for games assuming your computer has 4gig ram

Don't listen to them Vista is fine just get it and upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out ;)

"Dont listen to them" you say :/. Seem like u dont experience much. Let me give u an example which is of my case. I played Company of Heroes on my laptop using Vista. After 10-15 minutes, the video card always reports error and the game sometimes quits unexpectedly. I have the latest drivers for the hardware and updates for Vista Business. Another game is Poxnora which is an online game. It also froze a lot (10Mb Internet speed). All of these problems have gone when I switch to XP Professional.

U might say that my laptop is crap for playing game. Well, here is its specs:
Dell Vostro 1700
Intel Core2 Duo T7250 @ 2.00Ghz
3GB RAM
NVidia GeForce 8600M GT 512MB Dedicated Graphic Card
256MB Shared Memory

Also, according to this link http://technologizer.com/2008/11/10/the-best-and-worst-windows-versions-of-all-time/ and various surveys, the best Windows OS is XP SP2 and the worst is ME, Vista after that.

Is that clear enough?

However, it depends on u, Ragrits. If u plan on upgrading to Windows 7 which speed is comparable to Windows XP, u might get Vista and pay to upgrade later. Windows 7 seems like a good choice but there are unknown bugs which need more time to test.

If u just want performance, I would recommend XP. Nevertheless, from what I heard, Microsoft's not gonna support XP anymore in the near future because of the failure of Vista. People tend to stick to XP or wait to upgrade XP to Windows 7. It's ur choice really but as a gamer myself, I definitely go for XP.

Traudong, I too just want to play games without an hassel and if there is a risk of running into errors with Vista, I'll take your advice and choose XP.


Kazkepox, for money reasons I can't choose any other OS apart from these 3;

Windows Vista Home Basic (32bit Version)
Windows Vista Home Basic (64bit Version)
Windows XP Home Service Pack 3 (32bit Version)

And taking Traudong's advice I'm choosing

Windows XP Home Service Pack 3 (32bit Version).
 
I don't see what the big vassal with Vista is all about. I have never, EVER, ran into any program with vista. In fact, my Vista PC is running more stable than any other XP PC in the house.
 
I understand that some have problems with Vista, some don't. But if the sake of being as hassel free as possible, XP is the safer option for me.

Well, even if Vista has no error, look at performance wise and resource efficiency, XP wins hands down. Im practical person so I always weigh performance better than appearance. Vista wins in appearance though.
 
most games that i've gotten works just fine on vista I've had vista for almost 2 years even if there was a problem the game always released a patch and it worked just fine.
