burning files to dvd

i never thought i would have a problem with burning a simple file disc but it seemed ive found a way.
im going to reinstall windows onto my machine and i want to get all of my music onto a couple dvds for a quicker upload onto the refreshed system. they are 4.7gb dvds just for info. i opened my music folder and selected about 4gb worth (because i know that there is a small cushion of mb on a disc) and i "send to DVD drive..." then i selected file disc. all is going well until it gets to the end and it says that it needs more space on the disc. i did the whole thing over again but with 3gb of music, and it said the same thing. what am i doing wrong?

What burning program are you using if you are just copying and pasting onto the blank disc and using the windows burning software i wouldn't recommend using that. What i do recommend though is Nero it's a very easy program to use and I use it for all my copies/backups I have to make.

You really don't need over 1GB behemoth like Nero to just burn some data DVDs.
ImgBurn, or CDBurnerXP is all you want.

I agree they are good programs. Hands down and barred none. the most flexible is Nero Ultra. I still burn many at a time with windows 7. burning 4 dvds now with multi burn. have to make 300 dvd's for picture slideshow for friends and family. I scanned slides and negatives. strictly hobby but have done for years.

Never the less. my experience has been in the past. If burning files, and maybe small files i found it and depending on the quality of your laser head on your burner can always be a factor. Color of dye and changing can make a diff. slowing speed also does if files are small.
