Built in standoffs?

Hello,

I am about to fit a mobo to a cheap case i bought from Ebay, the panel which you would normally screw standoffs to has these sort of "raised nipples" if you like which when i fit standoffs to this the mobo ports are out of line with the back part of the case. I was wondering if this is a design flaw or simply part of the design and no extra standoffs are needed, what worries me is that these nipples are simply bits of the case itself "raised" up, they would provide a clear gap for the bulk of the mobo but still to me its seems like the mobo is directly fitted to the case.

Anyone know if i can fit this without any problems, they are only about 18mm in diameter and it looks logical but I thought i best check as I am building this for a friend for free and don't fancy paying for a new board.

Thanks

If the "Nipple" is metal you do not want to attach your mother board to it because it will ground it out. As far as the standoffs not lining up, there is really nothing you can do about that other than to attach the ones that do line up and see if it can support the weight.

Thats what i thought, if the nipple is metal then its a no go but with standoffs in place its nearly impossible to fir the back of the mobo out the back of the case, these nipples hardly touch the mobo and I was thinking that I could get away with some contact as long i wasnt touching the main solder of the back of the board.

Ehhhh, i wouldn't risk it. Also i doubt that would work at all. If you do try it and does work please keep me posted.

EDIT: How tall are the "nipples"

about 8-10mm I would say, looking at it they are tall enough to avoid any solder on the main part of the board.

Well then i might try it. If it doesn't boot you know why lol.

I've connected the motherboard right to those 'nipples' and things worked alright. Actually, my last two cases worked like that. I wasn't too happy with their setup, but I don't beleive it caused any problems.

Some come with these washers that seem to be made of cardboard or something. That's probably for placeing between the motherboard and those nipples, but the mobo does need some ground there... I've tried motherboards without them being screwed down at all(like just on cardboard) and they messed all up, but then worked fine in a case

Thanks to both, I will give it a try, i guess when you have a think about it and get a second opinion it seems like there are designed to be standoffs, still I would prefer to do it different but when you buy a case for £25 you gotta get on with it I guess :)

My lowly POS case has these nipples. I had to take out my mobo for some soldering work, and seeing as that's all there were to support the board, I put it back in with zero problems. They seem to be deliberate ground/earthing spots anyhow. Worked for me.
