Building a wireless access point and file server

hey, ive got a lot of time and i want to build a wireless access point with a bunch of components i have lying around(933mhz p3 computer, network card, and couple of big hard drives) and was wondering what wireless card is recomended, and what os i should use. i have a three floor house and the machine is most likly going to be in the basement (unfortunately). right now i have a dlink di-604 and the adapter in the computer on the top floor is a dlink dwl-g520. any help is appreciated
 
some wireless cards will have a software AP with it. So you would have to bridge the connection from your wireless router to your wireless computer and then run the AP software.

In all honesty you would get better results from just buying an AP or putting an extra wireless router you have in AP mode and bridge to your other router.
