Building a PC without an ESD wristband... tips please

Ok so I may be in a situation where I don't have access to an antistatic wrist strap and I know besides oily fingers, installing it should go fine as ESD is "very rare" (quoted). What is the correct procedure to ground myself to make sure I don't discharge static? Any tips? I'm interested to see if anybody has experience with working with what they have and being safe and effective.

And yes, I AM trying to get hold of a wrist strap.

I would not worry about static electricity unless you are in the situation where everything you touch in your daily doings causes sparks to fly. (Like your carpeting is charging you when you walk over it)
I have been in electronics for over 50 years, never used a wrist grounding strap, done everything from repairing to building electronics, and never had something fail due to static electricity.
That does not mean that it can not happen :=), but it should not be a worry.

You just want to ground yourself before starting, which means touching anything else grounded. Easiest way to do this is to plug the power supply into a grounded outlet, the outside of the power supply, along with the computer case if it's metal and touching should be grounded.

Also good to stay away from carpet, sweaters, or any other sources of static electricity.

Whew.. thanks guys, good to know it's not as bad as I thought it would be, had me worrying :)

Be sure to turn the power supply off when its plugged in. As long as you're touching the case while putting it together, you're fine.

Hey, guys!

Forgive me for butting in, but I figured this was the easiest way to get computer-building advice without consulting a "professional"... I'm guessing one of you knows how to put together a PC given the correct (pre-assembled) components; would any of you be willing to help my friend out? Let me know @ [email protected].

Thanks!
Lelia
