Does anyone know how to create a batch file to scan for new hardware changes?

I need it for whenever I hook up my eSATA drive, for my computer to detect it faster.

I don't know if that is scriptable, how long does it take for windows to detect you've attached the drive?

I don't think there is a command to detect hardware changes in the API.....

I am assuming this is for windows when you say batch file correct?
