Broadband Problems

Since I had broadband installed I have been having network related problems, such as command prompt network commands crashing the command prompt, Norton firewall stats crashing on loading, comp failing to shut down/log off via start menu.

I spoke to broadband company who said problems were not caused by them, as the problems were too widespread. The internet connection's fine and stable, just when I try and access things such as ipconfig, netstat etc. cmd prompt freezes, and System Information "Net Diagnostics" tool comes up with failed pings. The broadband's connected via Ethernet. Any ideas of causes/fixes? Cheers.

i also seriously doubt that the broadband is causing your problems.

you might want to check your computer for viruses and adware/spyware. perhaps also do a registry scan and a hard drive scan. . .

it can't be anything with your broadband, i've never heard of any problems like that from it. it sounds like you have norton on their so you should try and run a few virus scans because that's what it sounds like to me. if you don't seem to find anything i would make a backup of your hard drive and just reformat....it may be a hassle but im sure it's worth it.

What kind of internet connection were you using before. Looks like windows is getting confused on the network and is trying to connect through the "old" internet connection.
Try typing "ipconfig /release all" at the command prompt, wait for the confirmation and then type ipconfig /renew.

Last year I was on another Ethernet connection, no problems. During the summer I was on a wireless connection via wireless router, no problems. No net-related command will work, and unfortunately things have progressed badly since my last post.

I tried a repair install of Windows today, which was fine, apart from the fact that when Windows loaded, the reinstallation of Service Pack 2 failed, my graphics drivers tell me there's no compatible hardware to complete the reinstall, and when I restart the computer it hangs just before reaching the desktop at the blue "Windows is starting up" screen.

My computer seems well and truly screwed. :(

That's really a last resort - I've got too much stuff on this I dont want to lose, but maybe it'll boil down to that.

well you can take still make a back up of your hard drive right now and then reformat and clear everything....then you can just have everything on still.

you can just go into safe mode (F8 when booting up) and login then click no when the popup comes up to go to a previous date's settings go to a early date...you shouldnt lose any files and any problems should be fixed

occasionally i am wrong, but i am pretty sure that when you backup your drive you get an exact copy. so can someone please explain to me what benefit this would be?!?

thats like a dog taking a crap on the floor, me picking up the turd, wiping the floor off underneath, and putting the turd right back where i got it!? wtf?!?!?

back towards the original problem, and its one of those one-in-a-million shots, but i dont think it should be ruled out. at one point i had a virus that actually contaminated hardware if not repaired in the registry. shoot me in the foot if that sounds foolish or crazy but i swear it. thats the whole reason i had to rebuild. switching to broadband may not be the problem, but with broadband, there is a higher chance of your computer getting infected, purely due to the higher bandwidth capacity. i second the safe-mode option, save whatever you can, and get while the gettin' is good.

I've just regained internet access - basically I just thought to hell with it (yup i had one of THOSE moments) and backed up as much "unreplacable" stuff as possible onto a portable HD, then did a fresh install of windows. Running like a dream now, wonder how long it'll stay that way?

Thanks for your suggestions guys.

I've got both Norton Firewall and Antivirus, I scan regularly and I dont think it was a virus. It was just windows corrupting bit by bit i think, that's all.
