you really dont need to know anything about remote terminals. whether ure on a RT or out of the CO is transparent to the end user. and if ure adsl light remains on, then you are still getting dsl sync.
you said u dont have a router right? and your computer is directly connected to the dsl modem? than you must use some type of authentication software on your computer such as winpoet? something that your dsl provider gave you? it must be that login box that you speak of when u open IE.
in internet explorer, under the tools menu, click on internet options, and then on the connections tab. at the very bottom right there is a button for lan settings, click on that and make sure that Automatically detect settings is selected. also, i assume that like most isp's you are given a dynamic ip address. thus u should not worry about dns servers, because if u are auto assigned an ip, you get the dns addresses automatically as well.
next time you log in go to Run in the start menu, type in CMD and hit enter. then type in:
ping computerforum.com
you should get something that looks like this:
Pinging computerforum.com [64.191.70.9] with 32 bytes of data:

then, when u notice it disconnect, do the same thing, and see if it says host cannot be contacted, or something like that. if it does do that, make sure that your authentication software is still running. if u are still having problems, post back, and we will talk about your ip configuration
