Blue Screen when installing XP Pro on SATA Drive.

New hard drive Maxtor. Using Dell OEM XP Pro install cd to install XP on a Dell box that I just installed the new hard drive in. After initial install, when it booted for the first time it gave a blue screen. It appears that the XP cd doesn't have the drivers for the hard drive. Any tips to fix this?

Don't you think it's kind of hard to install an os without a format?
hahaha

Can you tell us what the blue screen says... its possible it has nothign to do with your HDD...

also let me confirm that your getting the blue screen AFTER the install of the OS not DURING or BEFORE the install of the OS...

Yes, it can be that it has nothing to do with the HDD, but one of the more common mistakes is people dont format their HDD before installation that might be the reason.

windows formats your hard drive for you when you install the os.... how else would it get the OS on the drive...

^^ It's only a quick format. I'm talking about the full format where hackers can't even trace your old files from it.

oh sheesh... the install has 2 options a quick format and a full format... and even with a full format you can pull files from the hard drive, so your wrong there too.

so your wrong there too.

You're all wrong! j/k. :P

The only drivers you would need are SATA controller drivers. Have you used a SATA hard drive in this rig before, or, are you using an IDE to SATA converter? It's possible that the OEM XP disk did not properly install the SATA drivers.

Are you receiving the following STOP code on the BSOD: 0x0000007E? If so, that code is usually related to a HD problem.

there is also a setting in the bios in dell computers that basically tells the sata raid to read as an IDE drive in a sense... cant tell you exactly where it is but if you poke around in there you will find it...

sorry for getting in an argument... that was rude of me.

Umm, sorry to be that guy, but you are wrong, formatting your computer does not...repeat DOES NOT get rid of traces of old files...basically all a format does s delete the file allocation table entry, all data will still remains on the disc and will easily be recovered. The only true way to get rid of the data is to encrypt it first and then do a dod wipe of the data.....sure, it's still recoverable....it most always is unless you destroy the discs themselves.

As to your problem, They've already said the most possible problem, there is a hardware problem. I would check the compatibility with your new drive and your motherboard, not all boards will work completely with some of the new drives....something to do with how the manufacturers set the drives up or something. Consult your motherboard and bios compatibility, there may be an update to your bios out there.

i got a BSOD on my thinkpad cause i didn't have the drivers for my hard drive (sata) and xp cd doesn't have that. if this is the case you will have to get drivers from the manufacturers site and put it on a floppy or embed it on a custom xp cd like i did

So have I, but unfortunately without know whether the BSOD is happening during or after the install, it's hit or miss when it comes to any possible cause.

the OP says
After initial install, when it booted for the first time it gave a blue screen.

what does he mean ? did he actually get pass everything and manage to format the drive ?
because XP starts the main setup right after the formatting is completed !!!

I had to re-read the first post once again.....the problem is that he is using an OEM CD to re install XP....as far as what i understand, it's not possible unless you are using the original hdd as it usually has a hidden partition with the recovery data embedded into it. When you put a new hdd into the system, that partition does not exist, therefore the OEM XP cd that you use will not work. I've seen this on countless "fix" jobs i've been on. It just doesn't work if you use the Dell cd with a new drive.

None of that is true. I've a Sony Vaio with a recovery partiton. I wiped it. In fact, a couple months ago I installed a *new* 250 GB hard drive and successfully recovered the hard drive to factory condition with the restore disk. The same is possible with this Dell machine. ;)

oh yeah that hidden (recovery) partition. i totally forgot, therefore he will need to get an unbranded XP disc.
but one thing i see odd, i have a dell, i recently changed my hard drive (160GB to 240) and i did not get any BSOD !! i used my dell XP cd...strange

Nope, it's not strange at all. The recovery partition is useless if you have the restore disks. You don't need it.

It doesn't always happen...When you special order/customize a dell, that partition contains the drivers that will allow the install to work properly. Years ago I had an aptiva with an older Nic and newer video card, when i burned out my hdd somehow, the OEM cd didn't recognize either (well video went to 8 bit horrid lookingness) and had some problems. I'm not saying that the OEM cd won't work, I'm just saying in my experience with dells, typically when you put a new hdd in, it's a bit iffy when you use that OEM cd.
