Blowing Power Supplies

Anyone have any ideas if this is a freak event or something more serious?

I have blown two power supplies within the past two months. The first was a 450W PS & the second a 500W. I'm running a P4D, 2GB Ram, 256 Video, Dual 250 GB HD's (one SATA), & two cd/DVD drives. That's it.

Last night when the 500W died, there was a loud pop and everything went dead. Other components were plugged into the same power strip and nothing else was affected. No power surge, etc. When the first one died I was out of town so I'm not sure what its symptoms were.

I did notice that the Power supply was pretty hot to the touch when I took the cover off.

Thanks for any help here.

Look, Mac's right. Cheapo units are cheap for a reason. You get what you pay for. If you want a PSU that won't blow up in your face and risk destroying your mobo and other parts, you gotta spend a bit, at least $60-70 at the minimum. Another possibility is that you're getting power surges on your house wiring. A low-cost surge suppressor is cheap insurance, even with a fairly-priced PSU.

Also with what you are running you probably want a 550 watt just to be safe. +30 A on the 12v rail is recommended as well.
