Big Time

Thanks for the laugh.
There isn't any real money anymore in building computers.
The only reason Dell, HP and the other big players are alive is sales to big businesses.
The profit margin is small and you need volume sales to survive.
It is also hard to compete with foreign labor rates.

Exactly! I remember when I was a kid we always went to the local computer store to buy computers, accessories, software, and for troubleshooting. Computers these days are so cheap though that as Maxx said, the profit margins are extremely thin, and many people think of computers as disposable these days. You buy a new desktop for $300, use it for a few years, and you can either get it repaired for a few hundred or buy a new one.

If you're thinking about building custom gaming PC's, there's really no market for pre-built ones at a local level (online is different), as for one consoles have taking a large portion of the gaming community, and two many PC gaming enthusiasts know how to build their own PC.

More people tend to buy laptops over desktops these days anyway, so building and selling desktops won't get you a lot of money I don't think. :/

I heard in the near future building computers will become a thing of the past. They're coming out with practically everything embedded in motherboards. That's CPU, ram, video, audio, etc.

I wasn't thinking of going big time myself. It was a fantasy of mine 2 or 3 years ago. Thanks for the info. I knew some of this already. Some woman in a self help group I go to explained things to me a few months ago. She also said you need volume sales to survive. I have seen the trend to laptops too. I managed to sell about 20 desktops I built on Craigslist back in 2010 and 2011. I couldn't sell them at cost, so I stopped building them. Now and then I build one, not to sell, but for myself, as a hobby.

Wonder if building custom laptops would be profitable.

NOt really. The profit margin is still below 10%. The only real way to get them is to get the MSI base model and install the GPU you want and the CPU/RAM/HDD that you want. But the prices of the individual parts will still be above what you can get for them assembled.

Though you might want to call Sager and see if they would do a rebrand frame for you. They would cost less, and be easier to assemble.
