hey guys i have 2 diff computers in 2 different offices, i was wondering whats the best way to make them talk to each other so if no1 is at 1 office i can still access the files, so basically share the files on the computer with each other....
ftp? VPN? any ideas
i want something simple just to access files from both sides

thankssss heapsss :)

with that software u have to log in and stuff and choose what u want to share is there anything else like more ftp type where you just log into each others ip and share files?

Are you referring to home offices or work offices? If home and if you have a wireless router on a broadband connection, you can easily network these and wirelessly access each other. You will just have to set them up so the router acts as the link between the two computers, fairly easy if you already have this setup running. However, if you are referring to a work office this may not be an option. Also, this doesn't strictly mean wireless, but you can also have this setup wired too.

i was woundering what is involved in setting up a FTP server on each pc, do i need to contact my service provider or is there more to it ???

thank youuu heaps

Don't use FTP it is unsecure and anything or anyone watching your network can capture passwords in plain text. If you do use FTP, make sure its through an ssh tunnel.

If the machines are running windows xp pro, you can just use the built in free remote desktop application. I use it all the time to get into my home computer from work.

Real VNC is also free, but it is unencrypted. You can make a VNC connection through an ssh tunnel using an ssh client app like putty.exe which is a free open source download.

I am assuming these computers are on two seperate networks? Sharing files may be hard because you are limited to your bandwidth. My upload on cable sucks, so I just bought an external HD to transfer files from home to the office.

Hey...

Well...If the two are true:

- Both computers are using Windows XP Home Or Pro.
- Both computers are hooked up to the same router/on the same network

Than this is a fairly easy thing to do. Simply create a network and share the files. If your unsure how to network computers, check out my post here (6th one down)->http://www.computerforum.com/64777-how-can-i-network-my-computer-my-laptop-together.html<-

If you dont have both on the same router, or they aren't using Windows XP than I would suggest finding a program to lend you a hand.

setup a VPN, for light usaage the linksys BEFSX41 will be fine. 50$ each. you will need a static wan IP though.
