best way to back up pc to external drive?

best way to back up pc to external drive?

got 1 TB external. didnt know if i should copy files as is?

use ms system backup center

norton ghost?

any other suggestions appreciated, didnt know the best route to take...

Do you mean copy the files, (music, jpgs etc), or make an exact copy? For an exact copy, Norton Ghost is a good choice. For backing up files, I like to use either Toucan or Unison.

whats the difference?

exact copy of i.e picture jpg. file copied to new hard drive
run ms system back up
use norton ghost
or use program toucan or unison?

one i just copy the files i need
while the others make copies of entire os? so i can restore as is at present time i made back up?
