Best firewall / Anti - Virus / Anti - Spyware?

I currently only have search and destroy, and I herd the d/lable 1 is fine. I was thinking if I should buy the full version of it?

Also what's the best firewall/anti-virus/anti-spyware (unless Search and Destroy is enough) that I should get?

Also

What does combo fix really do? I had spyware once and I didn't even use search and destroy and I used combo fix and everything was alright.
Does it like clean everything out or something?

SpyBot S&D is far surpassed by Spyware Terminator that includes a form of firewall protection of it's own along with some degree of internet security. Whenever "anything" whether download or software disk install or simply using an uninstaller takes place the active guard there springs up with the allow or deny option without imposing itself like many firewalls will. http://www.spywareterminator.com/

The most preferred free antivirus program at this time is the AVG 7.5 free for home use version made by Grisoft. That will often catch trojans as well as offering an excellent email scanner. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-spyware-free

You will also find an anti malware as well as anti rootkit program on the same page as well as the internet security utility. Grisoft also has a free Linux version of the antivirus program and also offers some special removers at another page for specific "bugs" and I-Worms.

For adwares and browser hijackers nothing tops Lavasoft's latest Ad-Aware 2007 except that the Spyware Terminator actually finds and removes more of the typical data miners Ad-Aware is good for removing. The 2007 version now sees an Ad Watch feature added in as well. http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

The best protection in the long run comes from being familiar with a variety of programs of different types. For firewalls as one example Comodo and Jetico are the top free programs while Sygate's personal firewall program is top rated retail product.

What's the difference between free products and retail products?

So spyware terminator is spyware/mini firewall?

Also

What program has anti malware, anti rootkitbugs, and anti spyware? Does spyware terminator have them?

Is I-Worms a virus? If so, what anti-virus (retail) should I buy?

And is Kaspersky any good?

Some retail products with commonly know brand names like Norton by Symantec System Works and McAfee hiit the bottom of the barrel. Norton has the reputation of being a "resource hog" while McAfee can't even find it's own shoes! :P I tried both over the years and very swiftly dumped them as well to find AVG worked far better for a free program!

The ST program is a more evolved freeware seeing updates and a form of mild firewall in that sense due to the active shield it places when any type of software change occurs. There also different types of firewalls as well. Some are involved with hardwares like dsl routers while ST is a software protector with the active shield it puts up when detecting any changes in the software environment.

Besides AVG Grisoft added the extra programs for malware/spyware protection as well as the separate tool for protecting against rootkits that can slip past other forms of protection and attack the basic system files. The Term I-Worm is one type of virus that spreads on one system and later sends out copies of itself once it connects online.

Kaspersky is one the best rated retail softwares while the AVG for home use is frree there. Grisoft also carries their professional retail versions for corporate application. There a few other retail program along with Haspersky that do see good ratings.

So is there an AVG retail product?

What is better in your opinion, AVG, Kaspersky, or Grisoft?

So I should get 1 of those, plus ST, and I'm all good?
Does avg have fire wall?

Also, what is the top firewall that can stop literally anything? Like even the top hacker

AVG is from Grisoft since that is simply their brand name for their own software. The AVG Professional would be the retail product sold to various businesses. The smaller version is free for home use and non profit application there.

I've been running AVG for years now while having tried a few others like Avast. Avast would do more to flag web sites that tried to copy bugs to the drive while AVG will point them out as far as exact location if not able to quaranteen them for manual removal. Many running Kaspersky have good reports for the retail product there as well.

I've never seen a firewall come out from Girisoft since they are antivirus mainly. Personally I run the three free AVG programs seen along with ST and Ad-Aware and even by Comodo called BOClean which is another bug scanner for malwares.

The active protection in the ST program works like a firewall to detect software changes not hackers trying to break in. For that you need things like IE security and a good hardware firewall around the means you connect online like a router. But no program ever written is ever 100% and never expect one to be. Multiple layers offers the best.

So what are some good non-hacking firewall products?
Which Grisoft/AVG software do you recommend in me buying? I want something that has anti-spyware. anti-malware, and anti- virus.

Maybe a link would help

The link for AVG posted earlier has the anti-virus, anti-malware, and anti-rootkit free versions all seen there. For the retail version of Grisoft's oroducts as far as the AVG Pro and internet security suite go to http://www.grisoft.com/doc/21/us/crp/0

Another retail product that sees a combination along with good reviews is strictly retail with no freewares except House Call from Trend Micro. Their PC-cillin contains adware and spyware tools wrapped up along with their main antivirus program. You can look that over at http://us.trendmicro.com/us/products/personal/

Most prgrams will identify the malicious code found in "uninvited guests" and remove the registry entries as well as deleting the source file when discovered on the drive. Some things like trojan downloaders go unnoticed when simply looking for online access to see other bugs downloaded that will infect the system afterwards.

That type only sees one reigstry entry long for simply poening the doorway for other crap while some create an entire list of values once on a system. Generally each program on it's own will be good for some things while others will slide past. The Combo Fix was able to grab the bug found at the time while it would likely miss others.

The same rule applies when depending too much on any other program. This is why having a multiple layer of protection plus smart browsing habits will make life a lot easier when you see far less crud actually get on. With the combination of AVG, ST, Ad-Aware 2007, and IE 7 not 6! I see a few data miners and no longer find trojans, trojan downloaders, browser hijackers, and other unwanted pests on both Vista and XP alike.

if i may add my humble opinion (although I'm really just agreeing with pc eye): if you're gonna buy an antivirus program, get kaspersky or trend micro. If you don't wanna spend money, get AVG. Get a router with built in hardware firewall. couldn't agree more with everything pc eye has said - it's all about multiple layers of security.. the only thing i'd add, is using mcafee siteadvisor. I know, i know, mcafee...but i swear it's not bad at all! I usually loathe anything by mcafee, but i have come to love this little browser add-on! And personally I prefer firefox over IE, even though it's a bit slower...this is because with a little extension called noscript, you're even protected against cross-site scripting. sorry to just butt into the thread like that, i just couldn't help but add my 2 cents :o

A blitz question PC Eye: How do you always succeed to make a perfect answer on tiny question, and it ALWAYS HAS 5 paragraphs?? ( ok I saw once 4 )
It's quite funny and I enjoy reading it hh

In my Opinion, the best firewall:

My Norton Internet Security 2005 (built-in firewall)

Best A-V:
Norton Internet Security (latest product is the 2007)

Best Anti-Spyware:
Ad-Aware 2007

I'm amazed how you still have your computer alive.
But then again I remember that you are security expert, benji.
Only if you aren't, I'd say that you will soon need to reformat your disk.
Norton is the worst antivirus! Really, next time you suspect you have a virus, try t scan and tell me, did it find any of Trojans ( when/if you get one ) that HijackThis showed?
I just can't believe it...I've heard only bad of Norton...
Maybe it depends who uses it...

Yes people say a lot of bad things about Norton but most of the time they haven't tried it, I've heard tons of "I heard that Norton is this and that" but not much " I tried Norton and this and that happened". I've been using for 2 years (2005 version) and I scan monthly with HJT and never got a single virus. Once, my mom opened a malicious email by accident, Norton picked it up but couldn't remove it, I agree it couldn't remove it but I knew how to do it with HJT and other tools ;)

The one thing I agree with is that Norton takes a hell lot of RAM, I have 1.5 GB and I'm alright but when I had 512 MB...lol

Smart browing avoids a good number of garbage sites where bugs are found like trojans. I give IE 7 a far better review then the previous IE 6 that was full of security holes. Speaking of Norton made by Symantec they have an excellent online scanner as well as Trend Micro's House Call. But especially with gamers people don't want memory hungry programs running.

For the free version of AVG I can state that with it totally disabled it actually sprang to life one day to point out a trojan probably downloader copied right to the root of C upon just happening to hit an odd site during a web search. AVG pointed out exactly what to look in order to manually remove it.

Besides the HT tool commonly used I found help with RegCleaner on occasion. The main window displays all non MS main registry keys when first opened. On the right side you will see new or old next to each item. When an adware changed the IE logo on IE that showed a "new" item called swearware put there by who? TVGuide.com! Just to look at the listing schedule you get hit with an adware! GGrrrr.... "tvguide bugs!" :P

It's not recommended when not having one installed since better programs are available. If you have a prebuilt system still under warranty you will have to leave that alone until that expires.

Generally a new program will often uninstall the existing program in order to replace it while others will require you to remove it first in order to run the installer for the new program. If you are not familiar with how to manually remove things if needed it's best to leave that to someone with some general software experience.

Out of interest where does MS's own Windows Defender rate in all this? (I know it doesn't detect viruses and is not a firewall)

I currently use my routers firewall, AVG free and Windows Defender.

Edit: Just trying that Spyware Terminator. It uses an insane amount of memory. 50MB for resident protection and 70MB to have the control centre open.

Well Windows Defender is there just so you can say you have some protection. Personally I wouldn't suggest you to depend on Defender. Get sth better.
Ask a professional. Oh, sorry I already answered :P
