Belkin Router Worries

Hello,

This is my first post on these forums, so forgive me for it's contents. I have recently purchased a second hand Belkin ADSL modem router(Belkin ADSL Modem with Wireless-G Router F5D7632-4) is the model number and I'm a little concerned over it's reliability-in particular after reading reviews that it overheats, drops connection often etc etc. I'm not sure on it's version as I never asked the seller for it(it appears there is 3 versions...1000,2000,3000 all with firmware updates from the Belkin website)

I have yet to buy a receiver unit for it, I assume I can buy and use a generic one instead of a Belkin only one? I was looking to buy something like the Edimax EW-7318USg Wireless LAN Turbo Mode USB 2.0 High Gain Adapter as a few people have commented(after reading many reviews) on that it may also be the receiver dongle from Belkin which is at fault and not just the router unit itself, and to give that Edimax receiver a try. Some people have suggested that firmware updates are something to try out as well. I'm kicking myself for not buying a Netgear router instead as they seem to be reletively trouble free and easy to set up. So what should I try and do? Play around for a while and see if it works out ok, or upon receiving it immediately throw it in the bin I hit myself for choosing such a piece of rubbish?

yes, you can use a generic reciever for it, and even better, if you're running windows xp, you may not even have to instal the driver or the utility for it.
just plug the WLan adapter in, and windows should come up with the screen that it has found a wireles netowrk (or multiple ), then you just select the network, fill in the WEP-key (located on a sticker on the bottom of the router usually) and you should have the pc on the network.

as for the rouder.. if you can, place it on a place ( damn, that sentence sounds stupid) where there is enough ventilation, i think overheating and connection drops might hang very closely together :)

Hello,

Thanks for the quick reply. I've taken onboard what you said and I'll keep you updated as to how I get on. I've just read the manual for the router on the Belkin UK website and it's very confusing(think this was the manual way of setting it up)

Lets just hope it won't overheat and cause problems!!! ;)

Michael.
