Belkin Pre N Wireless Setup

Background: I had a Linksys wireless G router that just didn't have any range to it. (4000 sq. ft. 2 level building) I bought the Belkin Pre-N Wireless router and that was a huge improvement however, I still cannot reach my garage at the oppoiste end of the house and on a different level than my access point with twisty hallways etc.

My question: what is the best way to set up my network in order to reach farther and minimize intermittently dropping off the network?

Options as I see them:

1 - add another wireless router attempting to have them talk to each via wireless. Is this possible? If not, pull wire to second wireless unit.
2 - add a pure router at my access point, then wire to a central point in the house and install the wireless router there.

What is the best orientation for the antenaes to be pointed? Veritcle or horizontal or at a 45 degree angle?

Any experienced help would be appreciated.

Maybe getting a repeater.. (basically picks up the wireless signal and re outputs it) or you can put the wireless router right in the middle of thw whole thing...

I saw too many returns on repeaters and high gain attenaes at my local electroncis store. (Frys) Basically to many "unsuccessful" attempt to improve a bad situation. I couldn't find a Belkin Pre N repeater on the market.

What about my option 1 above? do wireless routers talk to each other much like a repeater?

i dont think that will work at all. . . sounds almost like a repeater. and with either dsl or cable, you cant just pull another line to another modem/router.

if you did want to do something like that, you can run a wired router, and then two waps. . . but to reach the far end of the house, you would need to run a cable some distance. . .
