Becoming qualified

I thoroughly enjoy diagnosing and fixing computer problems, but I lack knowledge in many departments of this field. I want to get an IT related job while attending school for a Management of Information Systems degree, and it seems like becoming a PC tech or Help Desk Technician would be a good starting point and give me a solid base of knowledge when it comes to computers and computer systems.

I am currently studying to attain A+ Certification and I am curious as to what you people think about getting A+ Certified. Is it worthwhile? Is there any other good entry level certification training that you would recommend over A+?

For those of you who are successful in the IT field, how did you get to where you are today and what is your current title? If you could change anything about your training/education what would you change? And what about the specific IT field you are in do you like about it?

Thanks to anyone who takes their time to reply and help out someone looking for advice, it is much appreciated!

Personally, i have somewhat of a catch-22 hate of all certifications, doesnt matter what they are. On one hand, I know more people with an A+ certification that don't know half of what they are talking about. Real world experience in computer hardware and software and knowing how stuff works is really the best thing to do if you want to be successful. On the other hand, In the actual course of getting a job, certifications look good, especially on paper and would probably be worthwhile just for that reason. (I've been thinking about getting A+ certified myself just to do it) although personally, i am not pursuing a career in the IT or Computer industry, its just one of my current major hobbies, but i did look into it when i was debating what I wanted to do with my life. (Currently looking towards aeronautical engineering, not that its relevant to this post in any way haha).
