Basic advice on servers

Hi all,
Wonder if someone can give me some strightforward advice regarding different servers that are available and setup.
I have 2 computers linked on a very simple home network (simple cross cable direct connection with no hub).

Other than the normal network sharing (printers, files, etc) I would like to have a shared central mailbox using Outlook. (I did have one set up with Pegasus, but found it kept corrupting itself, and just didn't seem to integrate with MS Office very well).

Ok, back to Outlook. I have searched and tried some of the sync type programs available for Outlook. But i think maybe I do need a proper server setup.

So my question is - can someone offer any simple advice (as i am a simpleton) regarding servers. what systems are available. what i would need.

I am a bit confused over what is available from Microsoft: Exchange server, Windows Server, Small Business server.
Do you need all of them or just one?
Can I run exchange server on a computer with windows xp home as the OS?

I would prefer not to have a seperate computer as a server if this can be done. ie. Computer "A" works as server AND a workstation, computer B is just a workstation.

thanks in advance for any help offered

Exchange Server cann't be installed on Window XP or windows 2000 profisonal you need windows 2000 or 2003 server and this ganna cost you too much, so if you can use Windows SBS (Small Business server) wich installes windows server with exchange server and will not cost you that much.

i hear u can download windows 200 or 2003 on the net...anywayz i dunno much but the windows thing all sounds the same =/

What do you mean by a shared central mailbox using outlook? I don't think this is possible. If you are using MS Outlook, you can do an easier thing, you can make both outlooks on both computers read the same PST file, so you will eventually access same emails from any computer provided that outlook is not open at the same time on both computers. When you send/receive emails from outlook on any PC, the pst file is updated, and eventually you will have a central location for emails which is accessible from both computers.

Make both outlooks on the PCs the same version, e.g. outlook 2003 for example to prevent pst files compatibility problems.
