Bad Slow downs

Hey everyone,

I guess this is an appropriate topic, sorry if it is not.

Ok so for the past few months I have had some problems with my performance. Every TWO or THREE minutes my computer slows down drastically. It is really only noticeable when I'm playing games (Half-life 2/mods, Guild Wars), which were working perfectly before.

I am running on a...
Athlon 64 3000+ (1.8ghz)
512 RAM
Mobility Radeon 9600 (64 mem)

If anyone could give me some insight or some way to find out the cause of this I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

it could be that you have too many programs running at the same time. Try closing some down. Also try defragging, and maybe using a tune-up utility. It could possibly be that you have a virus, do a system scan for spyware and viruses.

With Half LIfe 2 as well as some other new games out you should plan on adding more memory. HL2 loves ram! But even with 2gb of ram there are other possible causes like temps, drive fragmentation, and an unstable psu. The games like HL2 pounce on system resources where a good supply keeps a little extra onhand to meet demand there. Cpu and other temps as well play a role when taxing a system. Source however eats memory.

Counter Strike along with HL2 and other games always seem to run smooth at the time they are first run. Then the demand on cpu time as well as temps and a need for more memory creep in. The old Socket A board here has held up by going from a pair of 512mb performance dimms to 2gb and additional cpu cooling added. This was on a custom desktop.

firstly your computer is not ideal for running that game.

i think that it could be as RIP said: virus or you are running another app while running this game or something. with only 512 of ram, hl will chew almost all of this, which doesnt leave much for anything else.

have you tried msconfig in run to sort out your start up apps and so on

Probably background programs you aren't aware of and if you have broadband, something is sending message in/out from your computer taking up memory. I.E. viruses/spywares.

Run some of the programs you find in the stickies and see if it clears up.
