Bad signal

ok so i just build the comp in my sig and its running great except the internet gets a bad signal. i have a linksys router and a wireless usb reciver and the signal is really bad. the router is in the basement and the reciver on the second floor is there anything i can do to fix this without moving the router.

If its possible get a better gain antenna IF your usb adaptor or the router are able to upgrade to better antennas. If not you will need to get a PCI wireless adaptor the can be upgraded to a better antenna.

Ive only had a limited amount of the different kinds of cards but my card is this card but its a bit to high. Although you might have a bit more luck with a card that already has an external antenna, like this and if its not strong enough you could try making your own antenna.

Sorry, My second link is messed up for some reason. But the card I suggested was this.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833315041

The card I suggested has ~18DBM of gain.
The card you looked at has ~17DBM of gain.

More or less, the higher the gain the better.

Although, the card you choose is faster, it is 108Mbps while the one I choose was only 54Mbps. Although if your ONLY using it for internet speeds, anything above 11Mbps will all feel the same.

The only thing, your adaptor that you already have is ~18DBM. Now it does not have an external antenna. But you can sodder on a connector to allow there to be a higher gain antenna.

Now that I know what you have I finaly suggest you just sodder on a connecter and buy a high gain antenna and connect it.
If you cant sodder than get either card I or you suggested and attach a higher gain antenna.

Also there is the option of making your own antenna. There are many guides out there. And a creative mind with a little aluminum foil can go a long way. also have you tried putting getting a longer USB cable and putting the adaptor on a bookshelf or something.

ok i moved the reciver alittle bit and got a good signal so now the internet stays on but downloads dont work well like they stop alot and stuff. what would explain this. also would my surfing speed improve alot if i got something better 11mbs something like 54

Well if you have placed the reciever as close to the roof as possible and gotten a better signal you could try and make the router closer to the floor. (You said you where in the basement and it was on the second floor right?). Anther thing you will want to do it to make the antennas face the same direction.

Your routers antenna is vertical than your receivers antenna should be vertical. Same if the router's antenna is horizontal, make the receiver's antenna horizontal.

No you will not see a difference in surfing speed if you go from 11Mbps to 54Mbps.

Something I havnt thought of untill now, If you can get a router with better gain that will help with connecting also.

ok my router is a linksys g router. what would be a better router. my reciver is upstairs and my router in the basement.

Unfortuntuly I cant tell if its a good router or not, Could I get a model/make?

yea there not good routers at all. I have one and i get 80% and i am only the next room over. Linksys doesnt make very good long range routers. There is a brand that makes great routers, but i cant remember the name. If i do, ill post a link.

do you know why when i have a "very good" signal that the downloads still stop .

Its because for internet you dont need as much bandwidth, and your router can supply enough bandwidth for internet over the long distance.

But when it comes to downloads you need more bandwidth your router cant supply it over that long distance.

Ok well the signal is good now for the internet so im fine for now i still may get a better card eventually but this is good for now
